The former president of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi was one man who valued the importance of agriculture in his government. Due to this, Moi was deeply involved in agricultural practices that would enhance farming in the country.
One thing he will be remembered for was his commitment in the conservation of soil through his soil erosion prevention project. The project was basically about terracing and building gabions in order to retain soil fertility.
This also involved his rallying call: Cut one tree, plant two.
His devotion in soil conservation as a farming practice made him gather the cabinet in the year 1989 and physically engage them in building of gabions under the scorching sun.
"This parliamentary session is not for talkers, it is for practical work," said Mr. Moi.
The cabinet had been reportedly gathered under a spreading thorn tree in Machakos town ready for the work. Most of them were dressed in casual clothing. For instance, former Constitutional Affairs minister, Charles Njonjo had donned a jeans and T-shirt.
What happened next saw 'waheshimiwa' panting and sweating profusely under the scorching sun
The president raced towards an open trench followed by the ministers. For more than two hours they engaged in the construction of gabions under the scorching sun. This construction involved using wire cylinders, soil and stones that would help fight soil erosion.
It was a hell of work to the president and his ministers on that day. However, his efforts in environmental projects such as building gabions received an award by UNEP.
