A Nakuru Lands and settlements lobby group has urged the county government to recover all grabbed public land in the town’s urban and semi urban areas.
Muungano Trust –Nakuru region co-ordinator James Mwangi, while addressing members of the organisation and the general public at Kwa Ronda slums on Saturday, alleged that land grabbing culture had cost the public a lot of resources, but benefited a few corrupt individuals who exercised impunity during the KANU regime.
He was speaking during a ground breaking exercise for the construction of a public toilet facility that is being sponsored by the organisation.
He observed that the now defunct Nakuru Municipality and county council had abetted land grabbing culture where tens of public land had been lost. He challenged the county government to collaborate with the National Land Commission and the central government to reclaim grabbed public land.
“A lot of public land has been lost in the hands of a few individuals who exercised impunity during the KANU regime. We challenge the county government to reclaim all grabbed public lands. We have records and we know who grabbed what,” claimed Mwangi.
According to co-ordinator Mwangi, the lobby group will anytime this year organise a forum to drum up for the reclamation of all grabbed lands in Nakuru County while exposing particular lands and individuals behind the grabbings.
Mwangi alleged that many public services providing institutions such as schools, hospitals, public offices, training institutions and sports have been affected by the land grabbers.
