President Uhuru Kenyatta's move to recognise the Indian community as the 44th tribe in the country has received criticism, where it was termed a political move in his vote hunting strategy.

According to governance expert Barasa Nyukuri, the move aims at winning sway the support from the Asian community ahead of the August 8, 2017 elections.

“The president needed to form a commission to advise him on citizenship because not everyone who applies should qualify,” Nyukuri said.

This recognition comes just months after the resident granted similar recognition to members of the Makonde community that originally immigrated from Mozambique and which now lives in the Coastal region of Kenya.
