Ikinu Chief Amos Kamau has called on recovering alcoholics to join the National Youth Service (NYS) to gain skills and improve their lives.
Kamau said with the introduction of the service, youths are set to be reformed and be responsible members of society.
“The National Youth Service has transformed the lives of many youth. I appeal to the youth who have abandoned the consumption of illicit liquor to join it,” said Kamau.
The administrator hailed the service for moulding youth into a pool of disciplined citizens.
Speaking on Friday at Ikinu Shopping Centre in Githunguri Sub-County during a public meeting, Kamau called on the government to lower the entry academic requirements to enable more youth to be enrolled in the service.
“The entry requirements to those wishing to join NYS should be lowered to enable more youth to be enrolled,” said Kamau.
He said that youth have been engaged in public environmental interventions and said Ikinu youth would help in transforming the area upon joining the NYS.
Kamau said that he would conduct awareness campaign that will see as many youth absorbed in the service.
“The provincial administration's intention is to see more youth are absorbed into the NYS, because if we fail to address their challenges, these youth may resort to crime,” said Kamau.
He, however, said the issue of youth should not be politicised by those intending to gain political mileage at the expense of the youth.
