The education ministry has been urged to recruit more teachers to curb the shortage of teachers in the county.
Speaking yesterday in Nakuru town, the Teachers Service Commision Nakuru branch chair Kamau Njau described the high rate of unemployment among qualified teachers in the county as worrying.
In the last recruitment, Njau said that almost all teachers employed by TSC were almost 40 years old and graduated in either early 2000 or late 90s.
He said the government must take teachers shortage in the country as a national disaster and take affirmative action to curb the problem.
Njau said shortage of teachers was first realised more than 25 years ago when the government stopped hiring teachers directly from the college. He blamed the three governments for the problem.
He faulted the government for introducing the leadership and mentorship program in public schools in which volunteer graduate will be used to guide students.
Last week, retired president Daniel Moi said the teachers shortage in the country must be taken seriously.
