Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is expected to address the senate today afternoon just a day before he officially retires from the judiciary having served for more than five years.
The CJ is leaving office following a landmark ruling on Tuesday requiring judges Kalpana Rawal and Philip Tunoi to retire.
According to a press release from the JSC, upon the retirement of Mutunga, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will immediately initiate the recruitment process.
It is expected that the JSC will declare the office of the CJ formally vacant in the Kenya gazette and advertise for qualified and interested candidates to apply.
A selection panel will then be constituted as per the law which will thereafter, shortlist candidates for nomination by the commission in accordance with the first schedule of the JSC act. The JSC will then publish the names of all the applicants including those shortlisted for public participation.
The commission anticipates the recruitment process to take about four months and expects the new chief justice to be in office by October.
