Police have released 132 recruits who were arrested on Sunday at the Recruits Training School (RTS) on the outskirts of Eldoret town for allegedly presenting fake Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) calling letters.
The recruits were released under unclear circumstanced following what the police said was lack of sufficient evidence to press charges against.
Eldoret West OCPD Samuel Mutunga confirmed the release of the recruits saying it was a result of lack of cooperation between them and the KDF officers.
“As the police, we cannot charge suspects before we receive key information and documents from the involved party, which in this case was the KDF,” said Mutunga.
“We had no option but to release the suspects after they were in our custody for 48 hours,” he added.
Mutunga noted that they were not ready to ‘waste their time’ in charging the suspects knowing very well the cases would collapse for lack of evidence.
Already the police department has written to the KDF seeking explanations as to why they didn’t cooperate with them as expected when handling the matter.
The 132 recruits were arrested as they reported to RTS to begin their training. They were expected to have been arraigned in court on Monday.
According to a KDF officer who was in charge of receiving the new recruits Brigadier Martin Ong'oyi, the suspects presented letters that could be authoritatively confirmed to have been issued at the recruitment centers during the nationwide exercise.
