The attackers are suspected to be Al Shabaab militants from Somalia. 

Eight people are reported to have been shot dead while four who have been critically injured have been airlifted to Nairobi according to Kenya Red Cross’ Twitter account. 

The attack which started at 3am is still on with heavy gunfire still being reported from the institution where security forces are engaging the terrorists for the eighth hour now. 

Kenya Red Cross has appealed for blood for the 30 victims rushed to the Garissa Level Five Hospital and given this number for those with any enquiries on the same: 0715820219. 

The Ministry of Interior and Coordination ‏@InteriorKE said “CS #MajNkaissery and IG @JBoinnet are already on the ground. #GarissaAttack”.

The Disaster Operations ‏@NDOCKenya says “65 injured have been received by the Garissa Level 5 Hospital from the #GarissaAttack. Tracing of next of kin being done by @KenyaRedCross”.

Business analyst Aly-Khan Satchu ‏@alykhansatchu said “Killing students who are pursuing Knowledge and a better Life is appalling @benngy78 @ReutersAfrica #GarissaAttack”.

The Kenya Red Cross ‏@KenyaRedCross says “An aircraft with 4 doctors; 2 surgeons & 2 anaesthesiologists has left for #Garissa to airlift critical casualties to Nairobi #GarissaAttack”

The attack has already been condemned by the British High Commissioner Christian Turner who on his Twitter account ‏@HCCTurner said, “Condemn cowardly #GarissaAttack & condolences for lives lost. Kenyan resolve &unity is stronger than terrorist's hatred.”

The international media has also taken up the story with CNN International @cnnbrk reporting: At least 30 people taken to hospital in Kenya University attack.
