Speaking on Tuesday from his office, Eric Mutugi, Red Cross deputy coordinator in Kiambu County, said the frequent relocation of residents from the two flood prone areas could be a thing of the past if a lasting solution is found.

Mutugi said the current rains have already displaced 30 families in Majengo slums, Thika village with fears that the same could be experienced in Gatimoni area due to the ongoing heavy rains.

“The best the government can do to curb flooding in Kiambu County is to relocate the affected families to safer places instead of only intervening during the long rains,” said Mutugi.

He said a disaster management meeting held in Kiambu last year had resolved to convert Gatimoni area into a water reservoir and find a home for the residents.

The officer said Red Cross will on Thursday visit the affected areas to assess the damage before coming up with a plan on how to assist the affected families.

However, Mutugi said they have not received any reports of deaths or an outbreak of water borne diseases in the affected areas.

Several people have died and property worth millions of shillings destroyed in different areas as heavy rains continue to pound various parts of the country.

According to the Meteorological department the rains are expected to last until the end of the month.
