The Kenya Red Cross Society Western branch has issued an alert to residents living in floods-prone areas to take precautions during the heavy rains.
The organisation at the same time called on people residing in the areas frequently hit by floods to be on high alert and should move to identified evacuation sites within their localities when called to do so to evade any possible adverse effect of the floods.
The organisation’s Western Kenya Regional Manager Benson Simba said already parts of villages in Kano, Kisumu County are experiencing floods following heavy rains that have been pounding the area.
He announced they are closely monitoring floods to ensure quick response in case of any flooding or rain related damages.
Simba said they are closely observing the water levels around Budalangi, Vihiga, Nyando, Muhoroni, Nyatike, Karachuonyo, Homabay, and Nyakach among other flood prone localities.
He said a number of perennial rivers flowing through such places are already breaking banks due to the heavy rains reported in the past one week.
“Red Cross is working hand in hand with other agencies to ensure timely and well coordinated response across the region," he said.
