The Kenya Red Cross Society Kisii branch, in partnership with Toms Shoes Company, has donated 20,000 pairs of shoes to pupils enrolled in 50 primary schools within the county.
Speaking at Red Cross offices, the branch coordinator Ms Margaret Mogere said the donations worth Sh2 million were in line with their 2016 anti-jigger operation that targeted needy pupils enrolled in public primary schools within the county.
“The Kisii branch anti-jigger campaign kicked off in January 2016. We shall distribute the shoes twice a year in public primary schools within the area sub-counties. We are targeting needy pupils,” she said.
She advised parents and teachers to practise good hygiene and ensure proper sanitation in their homes and schools adding that jigger infestation was directly linked to poor hygiene.
The coordinator said the branch was actively involved in the fight against the menace and called on residents to register with the organisation with a view to supporting the campaign.
She added that they have already identified schools that will benefit from the donations and they will receive them as soon as they open schools.
