Kenya Red Cross Society has announced that they are on standby as torrential rains continue to cause havoc in the Western part of Kenya. The western region coordinator Emmanuel Owako said his team is monitoring the situation and the response will be swift since they have mapped out hot spot areas that are vulnerable to floods. Briefing the Press in Kisumu, Owako announced that three people had died from flash floods that hit Bondo town Friday evening. Owako said his team responded in time noting that there may be many people who perished from the flash floods that caused havoc in the town. “My team is on the ground and we will update you on the number of causalities as we get them. Several families have reported missing relatives and the search is still on,” he said. He announced that the society has put in place logistics including humanitarian response to help affected families. Owako further noted that they are keenly watching Ahero area which has been hit by heavy floods in the recent past as he urged locals in vulnerable areas to move to higher grounds to avert loss of lives and property. “We don’t want to see lives lost in floods as witnessed in the past years. Let families living in low areas move out and seek refuge in higher grounds,” he said.
