According to NEMA, individuals found carrying plastic bags are likely to pay a fine ranging from Sh2 million to Sh4 million or serve a two years in jail term, or both.

The move is aimed at assisting youths from these parts of the nation to take part in the cleaning up of plastic bags from different shopping centers after the ban took effect on August 28.

He also called upon the government to incorporate local administrative leaders in educating the residents on the ban to enable them avoid landing in jail or being fined over the same.

“I urge the government to use chiefs, assistant chiefs and headmen to educate the public on the ban,” Guyo said.

On his part, Youth leader Shukri Ibrahim hailed the society for the move to educate the residents on the action, saying that it will make the process easier.

“Many Kenyans, especially those in the rural setups, are not aware of the ban and may land in problems with the law. There must be a sustained campaign to educate the public before the law is fully effected,” Shukri said.
