The Kenya Red Cross is set to establish a rescue center at the Likoni Ferry channel to be used during emergencies.
Kenya Red Cross Society Governor Dr Mahamud Said welcomed the move to renovate the former police post which is located at Likoni Ferry area, and change it into a rescue center.
Speaking on Thursday during the official handing over of the centre by the Kenya Ferry management, Dr Mahamud said the building will be very useful in handling cases of emergencies that occur at the channel.
He said once the building is ready, the new rescue center will always have a response team ready to respond to any emergency.
The Red Cross governor added that some of the Kenya Ferry staff members will be trained on first aid and rescue techniques.
“We are very grateful for the building as it’s a nice gesture, and together with the Kenya Ferry Services, we will be helping citizens in case of any emergencies and crisis,” said Dr Mahamud.
Kenya Ferry Services Managing Director Mr Bakari Gowa said the building will be refurbished and equipped with medical and safety facilities, adding that the center will be helpful to ferry commuters, as cases of people getting injured due to stampedes, congestion and suffocation are high at the crossing tunnel.
“We are happy today to announce that this facility will be a functional rescue center, and by Friday next week, it will be fully functioningm” said Gowa, as quoted by Baraka FM.
