Kenya Red Cross (KRC) has asked residents living in flood prone areas to move to higher grounds.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu, KRC County Manager Jacob Kitiyo said residents of Nyando, Budalangi and those staying next to River Nzoia should move to higher grounds.

“We are monitoring River Nzoia and it is currently rising. We expect the rivers to rise, therefore, the resident should move and come back once the water levels have subsided,” said Kitiyo.

By Wednesday Kenya Red Cross had taken some items at the evacuation site at Kogalo which was constructed in readiness for floods.

“We are on the ground both in Kisumu and Siaya County. Two days ago there was flooding incident at Obeyi Location in Muhoroni displacing 200 families,” he said.

“So far we have issued some non-food items such as mosquito nets, blankets, bar soap and water purification tablets,” said Kitiyo.

He said the county government has offered food stuff such as maize and beans.

“We also expect some rice from the National Irrigation Board to supply to affected families in Ahero,” he said.

He said that Kakola, another rescue site, hosts 175 families and they have received relief food and non foods stuff.

He said the county governments are trying in the coordination of rescue efforts with other NGOs.

“We are doing joint assessment of the status of the floods in Kisumu County, and see how we can integrate all the sectors such as health and nutrition,” he said.
