Christine Ongare is one of the Kenyans assured of a medal at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after she sailed into the semifinals on Wednesday.
Ongare, playing in the Women Flyweight (51kg), knocked cold her opponent, Sri Lankan Jayasinghe Dulani, in the second round of their contest.
The referee, Valeri Pastuhov of the Republic of Moldova, was forced to cut short the fight after Dulani was floored twice.
Speaking after her stunning victory, Ongare said she was happy with her win and is looking forward to performing even better.
“I thank God I have made it. I badly wanted a medal in this tournament. I will keep the same focus in my semi on Friday. My plan is to take one fight at a time and the strategy has been working,” said the Commonwealth Games debutant.
Her coach, Patrick Maina was equally happy with the win and said the young Ongare has a bright future. “We are happy for this victory, at least we will go back home with something.
I’m confident Ongare will make it to the final. She has the capability. We are going to rectify some of her mistakes ahead of her next fight,” Kenya boxing coach, Patrick Maina, underscored.
