Deputy President William Ruto has slammed Governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and his Kakamega counterpart Wycliffe Oparanya for their push for the constitutional amendment to create more political positions.
Ruto described the governors' suggestions as selfish and short sighted, meant to benefit a few individuals.
He argued that the country just got from elections a few months ago hence the leaders should focus on development, rather than wearing the citizens with voting every now and then.
Ruto addressed the public during Bureti MP Japheth Kiptergech's thanksgiving ceremony at Kapkatet Primary School in Kericho on Saturday.
"We are focusing our energy on bettering the lives of the people and realizing healthy, equitable development, mainly through the Big Four. The clamor for power and jostling for positions is short sighted," Ruto said.
He said the move is meant to benefit a few at the expense of 'wananchi', whose immediate need is service delivery.
"We can't waste close to Sh20 billion in referendum in a bid to benefit two or three people and satisfy their ego. Yes, they may get the job but what off millions of jobless Kenyans," Ruto added.
Ruto maintained his words when he attended the homecoming party of the Education Cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed in Kakamega County.
