Doctors offering specialized services at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town have vowed to continue with their strike until the government pays them their clinical allowances.
The doctors who are also lectures at Moi University School of medicine have been on strike for the past about four weeks. On Wednesday, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) national officials led by Secretary-General Dr. Ouma Oluga visited the striking doctors and later told the press that since a Return to Work Formula was agreed and registered a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the Ministry of Health their allowances have not been paid.“We want to tell the government that we will not go back to work until our CBA is implemented to the latter, It sad that a full professor now earns less than his students who work in the ministry of health,” said Dr. Oluga in Eldoret town on Wednesday. He warned that other doctors might be forced to join the strike as they have been overstretched in offering healthcare to the public.“We are giving the government a notice that if they will continue playing cats and mouse games without solving the matter with immediate effect, we will do a total shutdown by paralyzing all medical activities at MTRH and all medical colleges across the country,” added the KMPDU boss.“It is sad that students who were supposed to take four years have taken up to 7 years to complete their courses due to regular strikes,” he added. The strike has affected specialized health care at the Eldoret referral hospital as well as the Kenyatta Nationa Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi together will all public universities offering medical-related courses. To be the first to get the latest Political News updates for free, WhatsApp the word "POLITICS" to 0717410719.
