Korane noted that the residential place where the refugees have settled has become bare as the refugee community has brought down trees.

The county Boss has appealed to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to stop giving licenses to the refugees for cutting down trees in the area.

He noted that the locals are cutting down trees for firewood and settlement something that has left the land bare making grazing now a problem.

The county boss was speaking in Bulambala constituency.

He further noted that for the past 26 years, UNHCR has been providing firewood to the refugees from the Daadab forest, which has had adverse environmental effects.

He added that UNHCR should find alternative sources of fuel to the refugees which do not harm the environment saying the once forested Dadaab areas have become deserts due to the continued and increased deforestation.

“As much as we accommodate the refugees who are our brothers and sisters, it does not mean we allow them to destroy the environment by bringing down trees in the area,” noted Korane.
