North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamud Saleh said the two committees are not contributing to efforts by the government to restore security in the region.

Mr Saleh threatened to disband the two committees claiming that they are fueling insecurity in the region so that they earn allowances from the government.

Speaking on Tuesday at the sidelines of a training workshop for chiefs from Garissa County, the regional commissioner said some of these members have been in these committees for 30 years only to meet their selfish interest.

“These peace committees are proving to be useless. They always want the problems we are facing to go on so that they continue earning allowances whenever called to seminars in big hotels by NGOs and the government. They are after their selfish interest and not that of restoring peace,” Mr Saleh said as quoted by KNA.

Mr Saleh further accused the vetting committee members of colluding with some rogue chiefs to take bribes and issue ID cards to aliens.

He said these aliens later become a nuisance in the region adding that most terror attacks in the region are led by local youth.

“These aliens are people who have destroyed their own country and you are busy aiding them to acquire ID cards for a small bribe. This is the price we are paying today,” added Mr Saleh.
