Nominated women leaders in Kisii County have asked women to register in large numbers as voters to ensure they secure the country’s future during the August polls.
Registering as voters has been named as the crucial factor that will tip the balance in favour of visionary leaders vying for seats in the forthcoming elections.
“All women of sound mind and goodwill towards this country should register to vote and participate in the polls to ensure our region and country have chosen suitable leaders,” said Senator Janet Ongera.
Speaking to the reporter on Wednesday,Ongera urged women not to cede their responsibility to men during the polls, saying they held the key to quality leaders getting elected.
“Our elections are too important to be left to the men alone to decide the destiny of our nation and county. We must also play an active role as voters if we are to change our collective destiny for the good of generations by electing quality leaders,” she said.
The Senate Minority Chief Whip urged voters to reject leaders out to divide Kenyans along ethnic lines for selfish interests.
“Let us reject tribal bigots at the ballot. By participating in the electoral process, we can play a major role in rejecting divisive and selfish candidates who lack a coherent development agenda for our people," she said.
Nominated MCA Josephine Ombati on her part urged newly married young women who to ensure they acquire National Identification cards and voters' cards so as to exercise their democratic right in the forthcoming general elections.
"I call upon all newly married women to make voter registration a priority so that they also take part in the elections on August 2017. This is one of the ways they can safeguard and exercise their democratic rights while ensuring the region gets the leaders it deserves," Ms Ombati said.
