The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called on political parties and candidates to register their respective authorised persons who include a candidate, agent of the candidate or political party campaign financing committee.
Citing Article 88 (4) (i) of the Constitution which allows it to regulate the amount of money that may be spent by a candidate or party in any election, IEBC urged political parties, candidates and political party financing committees to submit details of the campaign financing account as per Section 6 of the Election Campaign Financing Act, 2013, pending approval of the regulations by the National Assembly.
IEBC communications manager Andrew Limo said the Act obligates the Commission to register “authorized persons”, and so they should open and submit details of the campaign financing account to the Commission at the time of registration.
The registration is expected to be done at least 8 months before the elections. In the case of the August 8th 2017 general election, the authorized persons should be registered before the end of today (December 8, 2016).
Application procedures and guidelines are available at the Commission’s website and at IEBC offices across the country.
