Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung'u has explained why her office failed to register a party belonging to Nairobi businesswoman Esther Pasaris.
According to Ndung'u, she did not reject the party as claimed by Passaris but she only rejected the name 'Harambee' which was given to the party.
Passaris had lodged a complaint with political parties disputes tribunal accusing the registrar of refusing to legalize her Harambee Democratic party.
However, Ndung'u has stated that the name Harambee is protected by the law under section 3 of the National Flag, Emblem and Names.
On her part, Passaris through her lawyer Maobe Maotsetung, stated that there are several parties in the country registered under the name and that there was no legal backing for refusal to register her party.
"There has been no refusal to register parties like Harambee Stars, Harambee Sacco which were registered many years ago," said Maobe.
The tribunal is scheduled to make a ruling on October 6, 2016.
Pasaaris has since declared an interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial seat and she had formed the party as her vehicle to City Hall.
