The Regular Police are leading as the main perpetrators of torture if the report released by Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU ) is anything to go by.
The National Torture Prevalence Survey 2016, which was released on Monday, shows that the the regular police account for 61.4 per cent of all torture, Administration Police 13 percent County government security 4.9 percent, local chief 4.8 percent, the Army 4.6 percent and Prison warders 2.9 per cent.
"Nairobi recorded the highest cases of torture at 41.3 per cent followed by Nyanza, Western and North eastern region. Central region recorded the lowest at 17.5 per cent. Most torture incidences took place in police cells (39.4percent), at home (31.5percent) and on the way to the police station," read part of the report
According to the report, the most prevalent types of torture are beatings, shooting and strangulation.
"Psychological impacts of torture is endless and stays with the victims and their families forever. Torture is prevalence which affects our own people and should be dealt with so as to become a thing of the past," added the statement.
