There is need for more advocacy for rehabilitation centres in order to deal with issues of drug and alcohol abuse and combat crime in society.
Rahab Mwiti,a Kenya Police officer in Nakuru who also deals with gender issues, says the government has tried to advocate for rehabilitation centres for alcohol and drug abuse addicts but much has to be done in order to combat crime.
Speaking on Wednesday evening during a forum organised by Men for Gender Equality, MEGEN, Mwiti noted that the society has also failed as there are still cases of discrimination and stigma.
"We know very well that there are our friends who are addicts of alcohol and drug abuse and most of the time we undermine and discriminate them, hence they loose hope and go back to crime,"said Mwiti.
"The addicts have no problem because they will be taken into rehabs and change but when they go back to the society they are stigmatized, therefore the society should also provide environment suitable for them," she added.
Her sentiments were echoed by Washinhtone Akala, a police officer who deal with HIV/AIDs counselling at the Kasarani police Nakuru.
"Most counsellors are not doing their work professionally, hence need for more professionalism as opposed to commercial"he said.
