Speaking from her office today, the sub-county environment officer Damaris Muchene, said the exercise will provide more space for waste disposal.

Muchene said through the terracing method the dumpsite which was full to capacity has now been cleared to hold the sub-county’s waste.

“The waste has been pushed towards the end of the site hence leaving enough space for disposal,” she said.

She stated that bulldozers had been used to form terraces in the site which will enable controlled dumping. She explained that this method will have waste disposed in a linear form where dumping proceeds to the next terrace after the previous one is full.

The environment officer stated that they have planted trees around the site to mark the site’s boundaries.

She added that the chosen tree, Mexican Greener, will also prevent papers in the site from being blown all over by the wind.

Apart from Mexican greener, Muchene said they will also plant leaches which will absorb waste water from the site and purify the air.

She said the trees produce fruits which will attract monkeys from the neighbouring Ngubi forest.

The rehabilitation exercise has been a public-private partnership with a local shoe company.

The dumpsite which has been in existence for five years holds waste from Limuru, Lari, Githunguri, Kabete and even Kiambu.
