More than 100 owners of vehicles under Kinatwa Sacco whose licenses were revoked by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) following the death of 17 people in a road accident early last month are now demanding that the authority reinstate them.
The Sacco argued that all the vehicles registered under it have complied with the necessary requirements including having them undergo new inspection and new training is done on their drivers. The demands come after the more than 100 owners of the vehicles camped outside the authority’s body to demand their vehicles be allowed back on the road as they have been making losses.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the officials accused NTSA of introducing new demands every time the Sacco complies with earlier ones. The official claimed that on the many occasions they have been to NTSA offices, they have not been given clear directions as to when they will be back on the road.
“Every time we come here we are told to come the next day, now today they have told us that they don’t recognize the training that was done on drivers,” said the official. The move comes after one of their vehicles was involved in a grisly road accident on the Thika-Garissa highway near Kilimambogo area.
The accident involved a lorry and a matatu at around 8:30 pm on December 16. According to the police, the matatu belonging to Kinatwa Sacco was heading to Kitui from Nairobi at the time of the accident.
