The county government of Garissa has acquired 10 portable ultrasound machines worth Sh6.5 million.
While issuing the equipment in Daadab County Hospital, Machine Health Chief officer in the county, Reproductive Health Coordinator Mohammed Gure said the equipment will help in reducing maternal and newborn maternal mortalities.
Garissa County has been recording a high number of pregnancies related deaths with the United Nations population fund reporting 208 maternal deaths from the region in 2014.
Health officers at the Daadab hospital have undergone training to adequately provide better health services to expectant mothers.
The hospital has never had such machines, with most of the patients referred to refugee hospitals.
“We have seen a motivated staff in this facility with the meagre resources, they have managed to do a lot to reduce the maternal deaths,” said one of the officers.
The provision of the machines will be a big relief to the locals, who are forced to travel for long distances to get such treatment.
