Locals of the drought-stricken Garissa county can now hope for a brighter tomorrow following the government's allocation of a massive Ksh 2.5 billion to help in mitigation the ravenous drought that is staring at the residents.

According to the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and the ASAL areas, Hon Eugene Wamalwa, a total of Sh2.5 billion had been allocated for the purchase of relief food supplies and cash transfers for the specific phase covering the drier months on February, March, and April. 

Speaking on Friday, CS Wamalwa said some of the hardest hit ASAL counties that needed urgent remedial measures include Garissa, Wajir, Kilifi, Isiolo, Kajiado among others. 

Wamalwa further said that Sh619 million from the entire budget would be spent on livestock offtakes, purchase of animal feeds, disease control and surveillance while another Sh306 million would be set aside for temporary water trucking program and maintenance of existing boreholes in ASAL counties.

Another kitty of ksh100 million will be set aside for health and nutrition, which includes availing food supplements to the locals to curb deficiency diseases.
