The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)has announced plans to improve the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, around the Salgaa blackspot, in a bid to stop the accident menace in the area. The Salgaa blackspot has been notorious for road carnages with the body now saying that plans are in place to not only expand but further partition the road.In a press briefing in his office Saturday, KeNHA Director General Peter Mundinia attributed the situation to careless driving and failure to observe traffic rules by drivers."We are aiming at expanding the road to consist of 2 or 3 lanes per carriageway. This is because according to our reports and investigations, most of the accidents in the area are as a result of lane disputes between drivers headed in the opposite directions and failure to observe overtaking guidelines" he said.Mundinia further blamed vandalism of road signs and guardrails in the region for the road's bad reputation. He, however, said that the issue is currently under keen observation."Vandalism of road signs in that area is one of the biggest contributors but we currently have officers on the ground taking care of that," he said.
