Governor Amason Kingi said the facility which is almost complete, will host a cancer management unit that will provide radio and chemo-therapy services to Kilifi residents who are suffering various forms of cancer.

"More than 250 new cancer cases are reported annually, most of them at an advanced stage," Kingi said citing statistics from the county Department of Health.

"The situation especially in addressing the cancer menace is worrying. We know cancer can be treated if detected early but what has been challenging is that we lacked the facility. We hope to change this trend," he told the Standard on March 17.

Kingi expressed concern that the County buries a cancer patient weekly, saying the facility would now ease congestion at the Coast General and Referral Hospital.

The Mombasa-based hospital has been serving cancer patients from within Mombasa, and the Coastal counties - Lamu, Taita Taveta, Kilifi, Tana River and Kwale.
