More than 600 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mumoi, Subukia have been able to relocate to Mwiteithie area after they bought a one acre piece of land.
The IDPs who have stayed in Mumoi since 2011 have thanked the owner of the land where they were staying saying he has been tolerant and understanding to them.
Ng'ang'a Gikonyo, the IDPs Secretary, says that the buying of the plot is a big step towards reducing overcrowding in the camp as now everyone will get somewhere to build a shelter.
"We look forward to living a better life than we did in Mumoi. Children will also be able to go to school as they now have somewhere to call home,” said Gikonyo.
He has however asked the government to help them acquire new tents saying that the ones they have are tattered.
"We still need the government in a big way because we don't have food and tents,” he said.
Gikonyo has said that they intend to acquire four more acres before the end of next month.
Each member has contributed Sh 500 towards the purpose and will get a 5 by 30 metres piece each.
