The government has cut fertiliser prices by Sh600 as the planting season is set to begin with the onset of the long rains.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri said on Wednesday most of the fertiliser that is expected to be distributed to farmers has been delivered to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in readiness for collection.
The former Devolution CS said this year one 50-kilogram bag of DAP fertiliser will retail at Sh1,200, unlike last year when it sold at Sh1,800.
Kiunjuri said it's the responsibility of the government to cushion farmers against high farm input costs.
"The fertiliser is ready for collection. Those who applied should feel free to go to their nearest NCPB depots to collect," the CS said.
"The rains are beginning and it is important to capitalize on the first drop to plant," he added.
He said the government has purchased a total of 100,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser which is to be sold to farmers, adding that there are over two million registered farmers expected to benefit from the subsidised product.
Farmers especially in North Rift in January told the government to avail the subsidised fertiliser in time to enable them adequately prepare for the planting season.
