President Uhuru Kenyatta has called upon Kenyans studying in foreign universities to apply for HELB funds as the government policy on education did not segregate them from making applications.
Speaking in Khartoum when he met more than 500 Kenyan students studying in Sudan, Mr Kenyatta said that according to the government policy every Kenyan student studying in any accredited university automatically qualifies for the HELB funds.
“We have a clear policy that all Kenyan students whether at home or abroad who are in accredited universities qualify for HELB loans,” Kenyatta said.
He said that the government will send to Sudan officials from HELB and the Ministry of Education to collect data on the Kenyan students currently in Sudan who may need funding.
On issues of intervarsity transfers, the president asked students in foreign universities to use the policy which allows them to transfer their credits to any Kenyan university in their final year of study.
Under this policy, the president said that students in any accredited university can transfer their credits to a local university from where they can complete their studies.
Also in attendance at the meeting were Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, Kenyan Ambassador in Sudan, Arown Suge, Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale and Mining CS Dan Kazungu.
