Hundreds of secondary school students in Nyamira are set to benefit from Sh100 million bursaries that were signed by Governor John Nyagarama on Thursday.
Initially, the proposal to award students with bursaries had been rejected by Controller of Budget, who disputed the idea to involve university students.
Although university students were not factored in the first allocation of county bursary, Nyagarama said he would persuade MCAs to come up with a legislation that would also see them benefit.
“This is your money and we want children to get the best education. It has taken us long to secure bursary allocations due to strict rules by Controller of Budget,” said Nyagarama.
He added: “Already I am aware that our students have been identified from the local level. It is now time to support education to improve our county.”
The allocation means all wards will receive a flat rate of Sh5 million and the kitty will be controlled by a select committee at the ward level
Nyamira County has 20 wards, almost half fewer than their Kisii counterparts who have 45 wards.
