For the past five years, Julius Lentoimaga says he's has been spending Sh11,000 weekly on renal dialysis at the Provincial General Hospital in Nakuru.
The dialysis is done twice a week at a cost of Sh5,500 per visit.
Julius reveals that several years back, he had an unsuccessful kidney transplant in India but is now preparing for another one in two months at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
“My 25-year-old son has agreed to donate one of his kidneys and we are currently undergoing a verification process to ascertain that we are compatible. My family is also raising funds towards the transplant,” said Julius.
On Tuesday, Julius received a wheel chair from a well-wisher at St Joseph the worker Catholic Church where he worships.
The wheelchair was donated by an area resident, Hamisi Mutura who said he had heard about the plight of the old man and decided to help.
“I heard about what mzee Julius is going through and I decided to help by procuring an assistive device to help him get around,” said Hamisi.
The once robust gentleman can no longer walk and says for the last four months, he has been using a borrowed pair of clutches to get around.
“Due to complications brought about by kidney failure and dialysis, my knees can no longer hold my body weight and that is why I’ve now been forced to borrow this pair of clutches,” said Julius who hails from Mwariki in Rhonda Ward, Nakuru West constituency.
Also present during the handing over of the wheelchair was the parish priest Fr Evans Njogu who blessed the chair.
