Uasin County Assembly has unanimously passed a motion urging governor Jackson Mandago to immediately mobilize and sensitize farmers on preventive and protective measures to stop the fall armyworm infestation.
While moving the motion Kamagut ward representative Nicholas Lelei said this will help avert losses that farmers will incur if the worm is not considerably and conclusively mitigated.
"Uasin Gishu is commonly known as the breadbasket of the Country and if the armyworm menace is not addressed it will lead to food insecurity," said Lelei while moving the motion, Tuesday.
Nominated MCA Mary Gorretti seconded the motion where he addressed the issue on the losses incurred by farmers in the last season asking members to pass the motion to prevent reoccurrence of such loses.
Kapsoya MCA Isaac Kemboi while supporting the motion gave his personal experience as a farmer pointing out that maize farming is the main economic activity to most people in the County and the issue has to be addressed once and for all.
Julius Sang, Megun MCA also supported the motion where he pointed out on the importance of the Department of Agriculture to rise to the occasion to curb the spread of the pest.
"The County government should facilitate access of affordable and effective pesticide that will curb the spread and increase of the fall armyworm once and for all and should send more Agricultural and Extension officers to the field to help the farmers," he said.
