Mr Hassan said the elections will be negatively affected if the government and the opposition fail to reach an agreement fast.

Speaking on Monday in Mombasa, Hassan added that a new electoral body will be faced with immense problems in terms of preparation for next year’s elections with the limited time it will have.

“I will strongly advice against that route. I hope they don’t go that route but if it is a political solution, we are Kenyans and we shall see how it plays out,” said Hassan.

“I advise the government and the opposition to reach a settlement fast to enable the commission make preparations for the 2017 general elections,” added Mr Hassan.

Mr Hassan however said the commissioners will leave office should there be no political goodwill regarding the stalemate adding that it would not be the first time commission has been disbanded.

“We have disbanded two commissions in Kenya. We disbanded ECK in 2008 and it was there for 18 years. We not only sacked commissioners but we sacked the 650 members of staff and we really lost a lot of institutional memory,” he said.
