Education CS Fred Matiang'i has called for the removal of the law requiring governors to have at least a bachelor's degree.

Speaking in Boston Massachusetts, US, Matiang'i said that the requirement was a key cause to the rising cases of forgery and falsification of academic credentials among Kenyans.

"Kenya should emulate the United States which does not have such requirements," he said.

“Hapa USA kuna requirement ya degree ya kuwa governor? Hakuna…why don’t we remove the law in Kenya…sasa wale ambao hawana wanaenda kuokota, wengine wanasema walipata PhD. ikiwa degree ya kwanza (Is there any requirement to have a degree here in the US? None...Now those who don't have one are going around picking them up with some saying they have a PhD as their first degree)," Matiang'i said as quoted by Nation.

He argued that back in Kenya, the law was not serving its intended purpose but was instead being circumvented by unscrupulous politicians who can go to any length to get the required documents even if they have to break the law.
