Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) boss Apollo Mboya has described the just concluded repeat presidential polls as "a mockery of our democracy."
In a detailed opinion editorial published in the Standard on Tuesday, the High Court Advocate opined that electoral agency IEBC failed to comply with the Supreme Court's directive.
In September, the Supreme Court directed IEBC to conduct fresh presidential elections in strict adherence to the Constitution and applicable laws following the annulment of Uhuru Kenyatta's reelection.
"The repeat presidential election conducted on October 26 by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will go down in Kenya’s history as one of the most shambolic," said Mboya.
He noted that the repeat polls were a complete waste of the taxpayer’s money.
"Coming on the heels of the Sh45 billion August 8 bungled poll that was annulled by the Supreme Court, Kenya once again threw down the drain another Sh14 billion," he said.
"As the election results trickled in, Uhuru Kenyatta had garnered more votes than the turnout. The election left in its wake a fractured IEBC, death, destruction, unanswered questions, credibility and legitimacy issues," he added
The polls were characterised by a low voter turnout countrywide.
