A report on the State of counties has ranked Garissa as the last in literacy levels at 8.2%. The county took the position for having the lowest number of educated persons.
The County of Nairobi emerged at the top when it comes to literacy levels in the nation. The county’s number of literate persons stands at 8.2 percent while Nairobi leads with 96.1 percent.
Other counties with relatively low literacy levels according to the report include Mandera, Makueni, Trans Nzoia, Isiolo and Wajir among others. Mandera has (25.4%), Isiolo (15%) , Makueni (22.41%), Wajir (23.8%) and Trans Nzoia (27%).
At the national level, the level of literacy is 72. 2 percent on average. Nyeri and Kiambu were listed among counties with the highest literacy levels at 91.8 and 95.4 percent respectively.
The report attributed the high literacy levels to continued investment in the field of education across the county.
The county of Turkana was ranked at 46% in terms of the literacy levels while its unemployment level was 70% making it one of the highest in the nation.
Taita Taveta and Machakos County had literacy levels of 45 and 52 percent respectively.
