A recent report by the Auditor General has revealed that residents in Mombasa County pay the highest amount of bribes to access various services.

According to the report, Mombasa residents pay Sh11,611 as bribes to access public services, followed by Embu residents who pay Sh11,500 and Isiolo 10,000 shillings.

The report further revealed that poor investigations are to blame for the poor progress in the war against graft in the country.

In the report, Auditor-General Edward Ouko further states that the government has done little to prosecute and bring to book those found guilty of corruption-related offenses.

The study was carried out to ascertain how corruption-related scandals have led to loss of public resources and funds.

Counties that registered the lowest amounts of bribes include Kisumu Sh1,867, Kericho Sh1,586, Nyamira Sh1,580, West Pokot Sh1,313 and Taita Taveta Sh1,300.

According to the report, Kenyans part with the highest amount of bribes during job recruitments which stands at 29.9 per cent, followed by arrests at 27.4 per cent, procurements at 25 per cent and payment of land rates at 8.9 per cent.

The report also revealed that Kenyans pay Sh18,333 for electricity connections.
