According to the KICD report titled; Needs Assessment Research for Curriculum Reform in Teacher Education in Kenya, those wishing to become ECDE teachers should have attained grade C plain from the previous entry grade of D plain in their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations.

According to the Daily Nation, the institute which is reviewing the curriculum, proposes that primary school teachers should be raised to C+ from C, while for diploma teachers, they should have scored a B- (minus) up from the current admission grade of C+ (plus).

For those seeking degrees in education they must have scored a B+ (plus).

“At all levels, there should be practicum (teaching practice) at the end of the first year and second year supervised by lecturers and teachers and principals in schools,” states the report

It was compiled last month and is awaiting approval from education stakeholders.

The institute also highlights the need for communication skills, inclusion of mentorship in teacher education and talent nurturing and resource utilisation courses.

The introduction of more continuous assessment tests, projects and practicals with formative exams at the end of term, like in universities, are among other proposals the study has highlighted.
