High schools students might soon be subjected to breathalyser tests, if a proposal by teachers sails through.

The teachers want to use the gadget to control school unrest, which hit heights in the country last year.

The suggestion has been made by principals and teachers who said drinking too much was one of the reasons why the cases have been on the rise.

According to their recommendations, they want students to be stopped randomly and asked to breath into the alcoblow to determine if they are drunk or not.

The team of teachers, which was formed last year by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i last year to investigate the causes of school unrest, heard that some members of the local communities make drugs available to these students.

“In one case, a stakeholder claimed the school boys were drinking alcohol like porridge,” read the report.

The report further added that they need to have the National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse talk to students in schools.
