Citizen TV’s Bungoma based journalist Namisi Chebutai sustained serious injuries after he was assaulted by Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka’s bodyguards.

The cameraman was attacked by the security team for covering last Saturday’s clash between supporters of opposing sides, in which one person was shot dead.

The three officers attached to Lusaka allegedly cornered Chebutai and attacked him using clubs and chairs, inflicting serious injuries on head and feet.

The men accused the cameraman of exposing of the governor’s bodyguards, who allegedly shot dead a hawker when confrontations broke up on Saturday.

The Law Society of Kenya Kakamega Chapter condemned the act on the journalist, and asked the police to take action.

The matter has already been reported to Bungoma police station.

Bungoma South OCPD David Kirui says investigations are underway and action will be taken on the assailants.

“We are treating the case as normal assault,” he said.

The incident comes as even concerns are raised over the safety of journalists as the country moves closer to the August elections.
