Kenyans will now buy wheat flour at a cheaper price after millers announced plans to reduce the prices by Sh 8 following the end of delay of wheat supplies at the port of Mombasa.
According millers, the wheat flour will now be going at Sh 129 per two-kilogramme packet down from the Sh137 that it is currently retailing.
“We have cut our prices by Sh8 and the recommended price for a two-kilogramme packet is Sh129,” an official of the Cereal Millers Association told Business Daily in an interview.
Millers had last month faced a serious shortage of the wheat grain after too much congestion at Mombasa port that leading to a delay in releasing of 300,000 tonnes of the wheat grain.
Following the delay, millers projected that the flour price would shoot up during the December festive season due to shortage of grains at the industries.
The port had later blamed the high rains to be the cause of the delay. They also linked the the congestion at the port to huge maize imports under the subsidy programme that were given priority in offloading.
