Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr has insisted that he will not join the race to dethrone Governor Kivutha Kibwana during the next general polls.
Speaking in Mbooni on Saturday, Kilonzo said that it is not the right time for him to throw himself in the region’s governorship.
He said that he will instead be defending his seat on Wiper when that time comes.
The Senator affirmed that he will spearhead the push for a review of the Constitution in order for the counties to get more money to run their affairs in the next government.
The decision of Kilonzo not to contest for the region’s top seat is a reprieve for Kivutha Kibwana who has declared to defend his seat during the August elections.
The entry of Kilonzo into the governorship race would have complicated Kibwana’s fight to retain the seat.
Sources indicate that a section of leaders and residents of Makueni has been calling upon Kilonzo to go for the area’s governor in August.
The decision not to contest for the seat is a score for Wiper Leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, who has been having sleepless nights because of massive defection of members to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto’s Jubilee party.
