According to the Ministry of Agriculture website, the initiative is part of the National Agriculture Insurance and Risk Management Programme that was launched over the weekend by the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries CS Willy Bett.

Technical assistance from World Bank, UNDP, Equity and Kenya Commercial Bank, and insurance companies has come in handy to ensure that the programme will be implemented first in Nakuru, Embu and Bungoma Counties.

The crop insurance will help farmers to increase productivity as they will be able to manage risks and losses as well as have access to credit. This will go a long way in helping the small scale farmers practising subsistence farming to transition to commercial farming.

With time, the insurance scheme will encompass livestock and other crops.
