Cartels oppressing carrot farmers in Mau Narok, Njoro sub-county have been put on notice by the County Government of Nakuru.

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui issued the warning after complains were raised by farmers that they are being denied access to export carrots to Uganda.

“Every farmer has a right to export carrots on condition that the laid down procedure is followed and the county will not accept oppression of farmers by a section of cartels,” he said.

The county CEO was categorical that farmers are only required to get a trade license from the Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) at a cost of Sh5,000.

He said that the county government will facilitate a joint meeting between carrot farmers and HCDA so that they can acquire licenses.

Mau Narok produces the highest number of carrots in Nakuru County with the main market being in Uganda.

Governor Lee Kinyanjui pointed out that the county CEC for Trade and co-operatives Dr. Peter Ketyenya will visit Kampala soon to look into ways of exploring better market for farm produce from Nakuru County.
