Residents and parents in Kibera have been challenged to remember the boy child loitering in the streets as they find solutions to rescue girl child from streets.
Dancan Sure, a resident said that it will be safer and better to have measures put in place to rescue boys as well as girls from the streets.
Sure was speaking at Kenyatta market in Kibera where street boys were sighted in a group sniffing glue. He noted that in the community, the girl child is prioritised by parents and are rescued from street lives but the boy child is left going round streets scavenging food remains from dumping sites and sniffing glue.
“When setting up rescuing measures to help the girl child from streets, the boy child should be remembered as well for equability. Stakeholders who come up with rescuing measures should help both girl and boy child from streets without gender favour as seen in other places. In the community, leaders are seen fighting for girl child but boy child is neglected, this mentality should change,” said Sure.
He concluded by stating that parents, residents and stakeholders such as NGOs should be firm and help our children from street lives to make sure that all their dreams and goals are achieved.
